Career Risk Score Explained

Understanding how your Job Risk Score is calculated and what it means for your career.

What Is the Job Risk Score?

The Job Risk Score is a 0-100 metric that quantifies your career's vulnerability to automation, AI disruption, and skill obsolescence. A higher score indicates greater risk, while a lower score suggests better resilience to technological and market changes.

How Is It Calculated?

Your score is calculated using a weighted formula that considers four key factors:

1. Role Automation Risk (30% weight)

How susceptible your specific job role is to automation based on research and industry data.

Example: Data entry roles score high (85-95), while strategic roles like executives score low (5-15).

2. Skill Future Relevance (30% weight)

The average future relevance of your skills. Human-centered skills (creativity, emotional intelligence) score higher than routine technical skills.

Example: AI collaboration (95) vs. manual data processing (18).

3. Industry Stability (20% weight)

How stable and automation-resistant your industry is overall.

Example: AI/Tech industries (90) vs. manufacturing (35).

4. Experience Factor (20% weight)

Your years of experience, with mid-career professionals (5-15 years) typically having the most stability.

Example: 0-2 years (50), 5-10 years (85), 20+ years (82).

The Formula

Score = 100 Ă— [0.3R + 0.3(1-K) + 0.2(1-I) + 0.2(1-E)]
  • R = Role automation risk (0-1)
  • K = Average skill relevance (0-1)
  • I = Industry stability (0-1)
  • E = Experience factor (0-1)

Understanding Risk Bands

0-30: Low Risk

Your job shows strong resilience to automation and market shifts. You likely have future-relevant skills, work in a stable industry, or hold a role that requires significant human judgment and creativity.

What to do:

  • Don't become complacent—continue building new skills
  • Stay updated with industry trends
  • Maintain adaptability and learning agility

31-60: Moderate Risk

Your job has some exposure to automation, but strategic upskilling and positioning can significantly improve your career security. This is a signal to take proactive steps.

What to do:

  • Identify and build high-value skills
  • Explore adjacent roles with better stability
  • Don't assume your role is immune to change

61-100: High Risk

Your job faces significant automation risk. Taking immediate, proactive steps to build future-proof skills and explore safer roles is essential for long-term career security.

What to do:

  • Don't wait—start upskilling immediately
  • Avoid moving to even more routine roles
  • Build human-centered skills AI can't replicate
  • Seriously consider transitioning to adjacent roles

What Your Score Doesn't Mean

  • ❌ It's not a guarantee you'll lose your job
  • ❌ It's not a prediction of when automation will happen
  • ❌ It doesn't account for your specific company or personal circumstances
  • ❌ It's not professional career advice—it's an informational tool

How to Use Your Score

Think of your Job Risk Score as one input in your career planning—not the only input. Use it to:

  • Get a reality check on your current career trajectory
  • Identify skill gaps you should prioritize closing
  • Evaluate whether a career move makes sense
  • Understand which direction to move for better stability
  • Start conversations with mentors or managers about your development
